Zinc
Zinc has been used for hundreds of years and was discovered in 1500 by Andreas Marggraf in Germany. Manufacturing of the product started in the UK and Europe in the 18th century. It now has numerous applications worldwide and over 30% of the global zinc supply comes from re-cycled zinc. It’s long life span ensures that old zinc will be able to be re-cycled for many years.
The main uses of rolled zinc sheet and strip is for roofing, cladding, flashings, and rainwater disposal. It has been used extensively in Europe for many decades and architects in the UK have realised the possibilities it offers due to its excellent aesthetic and practical qualities. More and more buildings are being covered with Zinc and it is becoming a common site on many new projects. With long life and minimal maintenance, allied to its versatility and cost effectiveness, it is a very viable product.
The zinc-titanium alloy used conforms to EN988 which covers such factors as surface finish, dimensional tolerances, and tensile strength. Various surface finishes are available to give a wider choice to the specifier and building owner.
Zinc valleys and box guttering are lighter than lead, and more versatile. They are available in longer continuous lengths.
Rheinzink
Rheinzink are one of the worlds leading manufacturers of Zinc products in both sheet and coil for the construction industry. Based in Germany they export worldwide.
Zinc is produced in it’s natural bright finish which will patinate to a blue-grey colour after continuous exposure to the elements. To eliminate the wait for the colour change they also make a ‘pre-weathered’ product with a blue-grey or a darker graphite-grey finish. The products can be used in various applications including standing seam and roll-cap roofs, vertical and horizontal rainscreen panels, and decorative systems.

VM Zinc
VM Zinc are part of the Umicore group and manufacture Zinc sheet and coils to EN988. They produce natural and pre-weathered materials in various finishes. Quartz and anthra are the standard colours but they also offer subtle shades of blue, green, and red, in their ‘pigmento’ range, which gives the architect a number of choices if aesthetics are important. They also produce a ‘zinc plus’ material which has added underside protection. A range of pre-formed panel products are also available. Samples are available on request.
Copper
Copper has been used by man since pre-historic times and its longevity is remarkable with examples of original copper roofs still to be found on medeival buildings around europe.
Since it was first refined around 5000BC it now has many uses such as wires, coinage, pipes, ornaments, and cylinders. A major architectural use is for roofing and cladding of buildings.
The natural copper colour , when used externally, gradually forms a patina turning to brown and eventually to the green finish seen on many domes in cities all over the world. These colours are now available from new, due to an accelerated weathering process which replicates the natural patination process. This allows architects to design buildings to suit the local environment with a product that will last for years.
Aurubis
Aurubis are one of the world’s leading global copper groups, manufacturing an array of different copper products.
Their architectural products, especially for the construction industry, are some of the best available, with high quality finishes in various aspects. Metra are their UK Distributor for roofing and rainscreen products. They produce these in their factory in Pori, in Finland.
Available in sheet and coil, we can supply standard copper through to their range of ‘Nordic’ finishes which include brown, blue, and green. The green finish is specially produced to provide the globally recognised hue which normally occurs over a period of years in the natural environment when copper oxidises through shades of brown, eventually turning green. The product is available in coil form so is perfect for standing seam roofing.
Other finishes including brass, bronze, and ‘Nordic Royal’ which is a gold colour, can also be produced. Samples and literature can be obtained from our sales office.

KME - TECU® Copper Roofing
TECU® Classic sheet and coil is manufactured in state-of-the-art production facilities to EN 1172 and KME’s own strict guidelines. It is made from Cu-DHP – oxygen-free, phosphorus-deoxidised copper with limited residual phosphorus. Cu-DHP is well suited to welding and soldering, and is minimum 99.9% pure copper. Cu-DHP is outstandingly malleable, regardless of temperature or rolling direction. Both roof and façade grades surpass the requirements of EN 1172 regarding tolerances and the most important material properties. This gives cladding areas their excellent visual appearance.
TECU® Classic sheet and coil starts off with a bright and shiny copper surface. After installation, it develops a matt, dark brown surface due to natural weathering and oxidation. During initial weathering, before the dark brown oxidised layer is established on the copper’s surface, a range of brown shades and even purplish hues can develop. On inclined cladding areas, the oxide layers are transformed by more intensive reaction to airborne substances and moisture, and coloured alkaline copper compounds form. A ‘typical copper’ patina green develops over time. This lends the building an unmistakeable accent, and the protective nature of the patina layer contributes to the material’s outstanding longevity.
Stainless Steel
Stainless steel offers a freedom of creativity and design coupled with sustainability as the material is infinitely recyclable. It has excellent mechanical properties, is resistant to to corrosion and fire, and offers ease of processing and installation. Ideally suited to building applications such as roofs, facades, and rainwater recovery systems. There are a wide range of grades and surface finishes to suit most applications and environments. The longevity of the product makes it cost effective over the long term and it is relatively maintenance free.

Their production capacity is concentrated in six production facilities located in Brazil, Belgium and France. Aperam is unique by its capability to produce stainless and specialties from low cost Biomass/Charcoal.
Available in two different types, ‘Uginox’ FME K44 which is a treated surface that is shiny when produced but will eventually dull down after exposure to the elements, giving a light grey hue. An alternative finish is the ’Ugitop’product which is already a dull matt surface is if this is required immediately. The steels are available in coils, and sheets can be produced to order.

Made to last with the lowest cradle to grave impact
Steel is the ultimate material for roof-drainage systems. It is much lighter than cast iron, is easier to handle than aluminium and offers minimal thermal movement compared to plastic (which can move and crack causing leaks). Steel also has the lowest CO2 impact of any competitor.
